Islamabad, Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has declared the study of Information Technology (computer science) would be compulsory at the levels of Matriculation, FA and BA in order to give students with necessary skill and to manage their livelihood and meet the challenges of the present time.

Vice-Chancellor AIOU, Prof. Dr. Nazir Ahmed Sangi, while initiating a new building of its campus at Mianwali, said that AIOU is the first public sector university which has achieved the distinction of facilitating its students with the latest knowledge of information technology.


According to the press release issued on Tuesday, the new building will be equipped with the latest `state-of-the art’ technology, including computer labs, video conferencing systems, examination hall, class rooms, Information Counters, library and internet facility. It will facilitate around twenty five thousand students of AIOU who live in the region.


The up-gradation of basic set-up is part of AIOU’s strategy to provide its staff with the best possible working environment, as well as enabling their students to get skill-based education that would help them to promote job-oriented education.


The VC said, AIOU has recently carried out a number of steps to ensure availability of quality education through state-of-the-art technology for all segments of society at their door-steps.


The new building is spread over an area of 31,800 square feet that cost Rs. 92 million. The building will have the capacity of arranging exams for over three hundred students at a time.


The VC also said that the university will increase wages of tutors engaged for various AIOU courses from this year. While giving out tutorship, AIOU will ensure that the tutor must be abreast with basic knowledge of computers.


AIOU already has 36 to 40 campuses all over the country, the number of these campuses will be increased to 39 within this year, the VC added. He appreciated the gesture of some public representatives and well-to-do people who had offered land to the university free of cost for building new campuses and study centers in various regions.


AIOU has been focusing on expanding its academic network to wide-ranging areas and providing education to the neglected regions of the society.
