Roberto DI Matteo admitted he had taken a risk by starting with Chelsea goal hero Salomon Kalou against Benfica.
Kalou earned his side a fine
1-0 advantage over the Portuguese team
to take into the quarter-final second-leg at Stamford Bridge on 4 April.
The former Feyenoord player has struggled to cement a place in caretaker manager Di Matteo's plans.
"I didn't think it was a gamble, but sometimes in life you have to take a little risk," said the Italian.
"He's come into the team after a long spell out - he got the goal and had a great game."
Chelsea caretaker manager Di Matteo raised eyebrows with his team selection before the game at the Estadio DA Luz
