The Higher Education Commission (HEC)
on Thursday February 23, 2012 announced
ranking
of Pakistani universities, the ranking is based
on the number of students, research productivity
and quality, innovation and knowledge transfer,
infrastructure, annual graduate output, international
collaborations, student satisfaction and financial health
of the institution.
The basic objective of the ranking is to improve
international competition of universities in order
to create attractive educational multi-cultural
environments and the trend towards university
collaboration and most importantly the opportunity
to improve and eradicate institutional weaknesses.
Overall top 10 universities announced by the HEC
include Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad at top,
Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences,
Islamabad at 2nd, The Aga Khan University, Karachi at 3rd,
University of Agriculture, Faisalabad at 4th, University of the
Punjab, Lahore at 5th, National University of Sciences and
Technology, Islamabad at 6th, Arid Agriculture University,
Rawalpindi at 7th, University of Health Sciences, Lahore
at 8th, COMSATS Institute of Information Technology at
9th and Lahore University of Management Sciences at
10th position respectively.
University Karachi-a private sector institution was
ranked first and UHS is ranked second in the category of
medical and health sciences higher education institutions.
The other universities in the category included Dow
University of Health Sciences Karachi, King Edward
Medical University Lahore, Liaquat University of
Medical and Health Sciences Jamshoro, Khyber
Medical University Peshawar, Baqai Medical
University Karachi, Ziauddin Medical University Karachi,
Peoples University of Medical and Health Sciences for
Women Nawabshah, and Shaheed Mohtarma Banazir Bhutto
Medical University Larkana.
announced by the HEC include University of Agriculture,
Faisalabad, Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University,
Rawalpindi, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore,
KPK Agriculture University, Peshawar and Sindh Agriculture
University, Tandojam.
Institute of Engineering and Applied Science, Islamabad,
National University of Sciences and Technology, Islamabad,
Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering and Technology,
Swabi, University of Engineering and Technology, Taxila, and
Institute of Space Technology, Islamabad.
Institute of Information Technology, Islamabad, was placed
at the top followed by National University of Computer and Emerging
Sciences, Islamabad, Qurtaba University D.I. Khan, Balochistan
University of Information Technology and Management Sciences,
Quetta, and City University, Peshawar.
Sciences (LUMS) remained on the top followed by Institute
of Business Administration, Karachi, Iqra University, Karachi,
and National College of Business Administration and Economics,
Lahore.
Lahore, was declared as the best university followed by Indus
Valley School of Arts and Architecture, Karachi.
HEC-Pakistan is the first one in the Islamic countries that has
developed Ranking criteria, methodology conducted ranking exercise.
Initiative 0f QS ranking is taken up by the HEC to promote a culture
of participating in the world university rankings for the purpose of
getting reasonable reflection of higher education (HE) development in the country.
