ALEX FERGUSON has backed Wayne Rooney

ALEX FERGUSON has backed Wayne Rooney to become Manchester United’s all-time leading scorer.

A goal against Everton tomorrow will take Rooney to 179 for United, putting him joint fourth with George Best and Dennis Viollet.
But Ferguson is convinced he will go all the way and knock Bobby Charlton off No 1 spot by surpassing his 249 goals.
Fergie said: “He is only 26. He’s got time on his side to beat all types of records now.
“What did Bobby get, 249? He’s every chance of beating that, hasn’t he? I’m sure he will do it.”
Rooney needs four goals in United’s final four league games to surpass his best total in a season of 34.
Ferguson added: “Wayne is the one player who has scored regularly for us this season.
“I always felt a few years back that he was a player who got goals in clutches but now it evens itself out, which is good.
“He got two for us last Sunday and his goalscoring record is terrific.”
Ironically, Ferguson has subbed Rooney in the last two games and even referred to him as being “careless” in last Sunday’s 4-0 home win against Aston Villa.
But Fergie still believes that, come the big occasion, Rooney is the man — starting tomorrow at Old Trafford against Rooney’s old club Everton.
Ferguson said: “I’ve always said that Rooney is a player who plays on the edge. He likes the edge of a big game and it’s a big game on Sunday.”
Indeed, after a wobble at Wigan, Ferguson is backing his table-toppers to finish off the job and ensure their five-point advantage with four games to go converts into a 20th title.
He said: “We had a blip at Wigan but the form of the team has been good.
“There have been good performers out on that field and they are playing with great determination, which you need to do at this time of the season.
“And they’ve got great experience of handling big-game situations, which we are going to face in the next few weeks.
“So I trust them, I let them get on with it. It’s the right time to do that.
“They are a good bunch of lads, they want to win the league. Hopefully we can achieve what we want to do.”
United turned a five-point deficit into an eight-point advantage over bitter rivals City before the loss at Wigan.
Victory against the Toffees could see them take the title in the Manchester derby at the Etihad on April 30.
Defeat, however, and Roberto Mancini’s City are back in with a big chance.
Ferguson said: “I’ve always said that the real crunch games come in the second half of the season.
“Teams drop points and, fortunately for us, City dropped points and we’ve managed to get an advantage.
“That advantage still exists but it’s not decisive. We’ve got to make it decisive and if we win on Sunday it helps us.”
David Moyes’ Everton will go into the game still reeling from their FA Cup semi-final defeat against Liverpool last weekend.
Fergie said: “It was a bad one for Everton, they went into that game with good form.
“I’m sure David and the rest of them will have suffered from that.”
United are waiting on young French midfielder Paul Pogba, 19, to decide if he wants to stay at Old Trafford.
Fergie said: “The boy has great potential and he is at the right club.
“We have agreed a deal with his agent, now it is just down to the boy.”
